House and Lot in a Planned Subdivision

February 10, 2009 by lauren

I spent all my life living in a house and lot in a planned subdivision. Back in the 80’s when my parents bought their first home, all these developers were still creating subdivisions within Metro Manila for the middle class market, so it wasn’t too expensive to buy a lot and build detached house then.

Today, however, it’s a lot more difficult to acquire a house and lot in the city; developers are moving to the suburbs of Antipolo, Canlubang, and Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Land in these areas cost less, allowing developers to build a lovely detached house in each lot while creating a subdivision that feels like a country club or a resort. Although these suburban areas are known for the fresh air, gorgeous view, and a peaceful and clean environment, the biggest disadvantage is that they’re at least 45 minutes away from the business district centers of Metro Manila. For some families though, they feel that going home to a relaxing countryside atmosphere is well worth the daily commute to work and back.

A house and lot is great for retired senior citizens who want to live in a more slow-paced environment, as well as growing families with young or teenage children. The influx of of families moving to the suburbs resulted in the establishment of several good schools in the area, so parents don’t have to worry too much about their kids getting stuck in traffic. The recreational amenities like swimming pools, parks, playgrounds, and basketball courts also contribute to a relaxing, family-friendly environment. Also, those who enjoy visual order will want to live in the newer, themed residential developments where houses look orderly and are built according to aesthetic standards set by the management. For those who want to have control over the way their house looks, subdivisions in the city pretty much let their residents do whatever they want, architecturally speaking.

What with the rising gas prices on top of Metro Manila traffic, I think it might be more convenient to either buy a house and lot in the city or live in a medium-rise condo cluster. Then again, Metro Manila doesn’t quite have the fresh air and laid-back atmosphere of the countryside. I suppose it all depends on what you’re looking for in a home. If home to you is a place far away from the stress and pollution in the city, then perhaps a house in the suburbs is what you should get.
